South Asia is demonstrating shifting dynamics, the latest 2026 Global Soft Power Index reveals. Soft power refers to the country’s ability to gain global influence and trust through its culture, values, and reputation. On the other hand, a nation’s hard power relies on military and economic force to achieve its goals.
The traditional leaders in South Asia, like India and Pakistan, are struggling to maintain their global status. Meanwhile, a new player is quietly making progress.
Though India remains the region’s top soft power leader in 2026, it fell to 32nd place globally - down from 30th in 2025. Although India’s cultural exports still resonate worldwide, this slight decline shows that keeping a leading image requires ongoing effort in a competitive global market.
The most significant change in the region belongs to Pakistan. Once in a stronger position, Pakistan saw a significant drop this year, falling 10 spots to 83rd place. Such a decline often indicates international worries about stability or a decrease in global views of a country’s current strengths.
The highlight of the 2026 report is Bangladesh’s steady rise. While its larger neighbours faced declines, Bangladesh moved up to 101st globally, improving from 104th just a year ago. To an outsider, a three-spot increase may seem small, but in global diplomacy, it is an important sign of advancement.
Bangladesh’s growth stems from its increasing reputation as a resilient economy and a dependable global partner. As the country becomes better known to international audiences not just as a manufacturing centre but as a nation with a clear development path, its influence on the global stage strengthens.
In line with this development, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam recently announced plans to promote cultural diplomacy as an important tool of soft power to enrich Bangladesh’s global image and expand its network worldwide, according to a report by Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha. Some of the initiatives include organising overseas cultural festivals featuring music and dance performances, art exhibitions, book fairs, folk music programmes, and culinary showcases to promote Bangladesh’s cultural heritage.
Bangladesh and Nepal are the South Asian countries in this group that have gotten better in the global rankings this year. India is still the leader in the region even though it slipped a little in its position. Pakistan had the drop in the region falling 10 places globally.
Bangladesh’s growth underscores the its steady emergence as a competitive soft power nation. Its rich heritage, delectable cuisine, and a notable presence in the game of cricket – all key soft power elements - has earned it a reputable position in South Asia.
